Four Runnels County 4-H members are wrapping up their 4-H careers on a high note — with a national championship and scholarship money to show for it.
Elizabeth Minzenmayer, Paysley Branham, Olivia Bean and Evan Cave recently capped off a three-year run in the Texas 4-H Food Challenge. The contest gives teams 40 minutes to create a dish from a mystery list of ingredients, then present it to judges for scoring on preparation, nutrition, food safety and cost.
The group won the state title last June, followed by a national championship in September. Earlier this month, they claimed first place at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Food Challenge, earning a $20,000 scholarship.
The award will be split evenly, giving each student $5,000 for college.
Their coach says beyond cooking skills, the competition helped the teens build teamwork, confidence and the ability to think on their feet.
