Winters ISD is reminding parents and guardians about a new Texas law requiring school districts to provide information about the safe storage of firearms.
Under state law, it is illegal to store, transport or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be or gain access. Penalties can range from a 500-dollar fine to a 4-thousand-dollar fine and up to a year in jail.
Winters ISD says firearms should be unloaded and stored in a locked container, with ammunition stored separately.
