A proposed hyper scale data center to be built northeast of San Angelo is drawing both economic interest and community concern from area residents. Dallas-based Skybox Datacenters is seeking to build the facility on roughly 350 acres of city-owned land near U.S. Highway 67 and City Farm Road, at the former City Farm site in San Angelo.
City and chamber officials say the data center would not strain San Angelo’s electric grid. Power would come from the nearby AEP Red Creek Substation, which operates well below capacity and primarily carries West Texas wind and solar energy to larger cities.
The project could generate an estimated 27 million dollars a year in franchise fees for San Angelo. However, residents at a citizen-led meeting raised concerns about water use, noise, power demand, and transparency in the approval process.
City officials say the project is still under review and no final decisions have been made
