The City of Ballinger will temporarily convert its public water system disinfectant from chloramine to free chlorine, beginning June 18 through July 18, as part of routine maintenance.
City officials say the temporary switch—known as a “chlorine burn”—is a standard method to cleanse the system and improve water quality by removing organic build-up in pipes and reducing harmless bacteria that can affect disinfectant levels. Residents may notice a change in taste or odor, but health officials confirm the water remains safe for drinking, cooking, and bathing.
Disinfecting public water is critical to preventing disease outbreaks, and both chlorine and chloramine are approved by the EPA and CDC for safe use. The City says the conversion helps ensure long-term water safety and complies with state regulations requiring strong disinfection residuals throughout the system.
