A dispute between the City of Ballinger and Runnels County over funding for fire services has led to the creation of two separate fire departments and raised concerns about access to emergency equipment.
For years, the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department served both the city and surrounding county areas. City officials have said the county was not contributing a fair share of costs, and the disagreement was never fully resolved.
In 2026, the city established its own department, now called the Ballinger Fire Department, while the original organization continues as the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department.
On April 6, the Ballinger City Council voted to lock the original fire station, restricting the volunteer department’s access to equipment stored inside, including protective gear and rescue tools used in emergency situations.
The volunteer department says it is now working to replace that equipment through fundraising and community support, while continuing to respond to calls across the city and county.
Officials say efforts to resolve the situation are ongoing.
