Runnels County Landowners eligible for wildfire mitigation grants

SHARE NOW

Texas landowners in 39 Central Texas counties — including Runnels County — can soon apply for grant funding to reduce wildfire risk around homes and property.

The Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant, offered through the Texas A&M Forest Service, opens for applications June 1 through July 14. The program reimburses landowners up to 20-thousand dollars for approved projects like clearing brush, cutting trees, and creating defensible space or fuel breaks.

All work must be completed by an independent contractor — not the landowner — and burning is not allowed under the program. Priority goes to projects within 100 feet of homes or structures.

Applications must be submitted online only through the Texas A-and-M Forest Service website. Landowners will need to include a property map, contractor estimate, and project details.

This is a competitive grant, and applicants will be notified by late August, with project completion deadlines set for April 2027.
