Winters ISD is notifying families about a new Texas requirement on firearm safety information. In a letter dated May fourth, the district says state law now requires schools to share guidance on safe storage and how to talk with children about firearms.
The notice cites Texas Penal Code 46.13, which makes it an offense if a child gains access to a readily usable firearm due to criminal negligence. That includes failing to secure a gun or leaving it where a child could access it.
Penalties range from a Class C misdemeanor up to a Class A misdemeanor, with possible jail time.
The district reminds parents to store guns unloaded in a locked container, with ammunition kept separately. More information is available at safegunstoragetexas dot com.
