Winters ISD officials addressed concerns about the future of Blizzard football during a special school board meeting held Friday morning at 7am, May 1.
Rumors had circulated on social media that Winters might not field a varsity football team this fall, prompting Athletic Director and Head Coach Ryan Panell to request the public meeting so the community could hear accurate information about the program’s status.
Panell reported that 25 student-athletes in grades 9 through 12 have committed to play football this season. As things currently stand, Winters plans to field a full varsity schedule this fall, with all 25 players expected to compete at the varsity level unless circumstances change.
During the meeting, Panell discussed several scheduling scenarios and answered questions from community members regarding the athletic program. He emphasized that his responses reflected his own observations and expectations for the program rather than speculation circulating on social media.
Panell also noted that participation numbers in younger grades are improving, with enrollment trends looking positive for the 2027 and 2028 school years as more students become involved in athletics.
“It takes time to develop a program, but Winters is headed in the right direction,” Panell said.
