DPS Warns Texans About Gas Pump Tampering Scam

The Texas Department of Public Safety is warning Texans to stay alert for possible gas pump tampering devices designed to steal credit and debit card information. DPS says criminals may place skimmers inside pumps or use small devices that keep a transaction open for the next customer.

Officials advise drivers to inspect card readers and nozzle cradles for anything unusual before fueling. Motorists should also make sure their transaction fully ends before leaving the pump and closely monitor bank statements for suspicious charges.

DPS says if something looks suspicious, drivers should avoid using the pump, notify station employees immediately, and contact local law enforcement if tampering is suspected. Officials also remind customers to cover their PIN when entering payment information.
