A powerline sparked a ditch fire near Winters yesterday afternoon, sending flames racing through dry grass. Officials say the fire spread quickly in the hot, dry conditions, but firefighters were able to contain it thanks to a fast response and a fortunate lack of wind. No injuries or property damage were reported. Authorities caution that with the area still under extreme drought conditions, even a small spark can lead to disaster. Runnels County remains under a burn ban that commissioners first put in place back in August, and residents are urged to stay alert and use extra care to avoid wildfires.
