Texas public schools are now required to provide parents and guardians with information on the safe storage of firearms.
Winters ISD released a notice this week citing a Texas law that makes it illegal to store or leave a firearm where a child could gain access. Under the law, a person can face criminal charges if a child accesses an unsecured firearm, with penalties ranging from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor.
The district reminds parents that firearms should be stored unloaded in a locked container, with ammunition kept separately. More information is available through the Texas Department of Public Safety
