UIL Enforces Tougher Rules on Spectator Behavior

SHARE NOW

Beginning this school year, game officials across Texas can now eject spectators immediately for disruptive or inappropriate behavior at UIL athletic events.

Under Senate Bill 2929, no warning is required. The law was passed after a rise in verbal abuse and threats aimed at referees statewide, part of a growing concern about protecting young athletes and keeping contests safe.

Spectators who are asked to leave must comply, and the decision is final under Texas law. Schools that rack up three incidents risk losing the ability to host home officials.

The UIL says the tougher rule reinforces good sportsmanship—reminding fans to cheer for their team, respect officials, and keep games positive for everyone.
