Edith Freeman Hubbell
1923-2025

Edith Hubbell, longtime first grade teacher in Ballinger, TX, died in Ft. Worth, Texas on May 16, 2025. She was 101 years old, six weeks shy of her 102nd birthday.

Edith was born on July 7, 1923 to Joseph J. Freeman, Sr. and Edith A. Freeman. She lived most of her childhood in Ft. McKavett, Texas with her three brothers, Joe Jr., Daniel, and Charles. She attended a one-room school in Ft. McKavett before entering the Menard schools for her junior high and high school education. She graduated from Menard High School and attended Sul Ross State University for two years, pausing her university education to teach elementary grades on an emergency certificate at Menard during World War II. She married Elmer Edward Hubbell of Ft. McKavett on June 7, 1946 following his discharge from the Army at the end of World War II. Edith completed Business School in San Angelo, and worked as a bookkeeper for the early years of their marriage.

They moved to Ballinger in the early 1950s where they had their two children: Carl Edward and June Ann. Following the birth of their children, Edith was a homemaker until her children entered elementary school and she then completed her university education with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1965 and her Master of Arts in Teaching in 1967, both from Angelo State University. She taught first grade at Ballinger Elementary School for 30 years.

Edith also taught English as a second language in night school to Polish workers immigrating to the U.S. to work in Ballinger. She also completed her Real Estate license and worked in that field briefly at the end of her teaching career. Edith and Elmer were married for forty-four years until Elmer’s death in 2000.

Edith is survived by her children: Carl Edward Hubbell, M.D. and wife Sheila Horsley Hubbell, M.D. of Ft. Worth, and The Rev. Dr. June Hubbell Smith, widowed, of Silverton, OR. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service honoring Edith will be held at Ft. McKavett Cemetery at 6 p.m., Saturday, August 2, 2025.
