The federal government shutdown is now stretching into its fourth week, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — or SNAP — could soon be affected. More than 42 million Americans depend on SNAP, including about 3.4 million Texans, roughly eleven percent of the state’s population.
Here in Runnels County, local families relying on those monthly food benefits could feel the pinch if November payments are delayed. Community groups are preparing to help: the Ballinger Ministerial Alliance assists families in crisis through local churches, and Ballinger Cares offers food support and accepts donations at its thrift store.
