The bands at Ballinger and Winters high schools are celebrating top honors after earning UIL sweepstakes awards this week.
Both bands competed at the University Interscholastic League Region 6 concert and sight-reading contest, where they performed three prepared concert selections for judges and then sight-read a piece of music they had never seen before.
In Texas UIL music competition, a sweepstakes award is given when a band receives Division One, or superior ratings, in concert performance, sight-reading and marching band during the school year.
The sweepstakes honor recognizes consistent superior performance across the UIL judging categories and is considered one of the top achievements for Texas school band programs.
Winters Mayor Chris Bahlman, by proclamation, declared March 5th “Pride of West Texas Blizzard Band Day.” The proclamation will be presented to the band at the March 30th city council meeting.
