NWS Urges Residents to Train as Storm Spotters

SHARE NOW

The NWS is actively encouraging community members to participate in Storm Spotter Training sessions to help improve local severe weather awareness and response.

Each year, meteorologists from the National Weather Service conduct SKYWARN® Storm Spotter Training across West Central Texas, including Runnels County. These sessions are hosted in partnership with local emergency management officials and are designed to teach volunteers how to accurately identify and report severe weather such as funnel clouds, hail size, and damaging winds—reports that can directly impact public safety and weather warnings.

While some training sessions are offered in person, many are available online for those who prefer virtual learning. If you are unable to attend the Runnels County-specific class, you are welcome to join one of the “Open” virtual sessions listed on the NWS website.

To register for a training session or to access additional educational materials, visit the Becoming a Spotter page or the SkyWarn Training Page.
