Texas wildlife officials say quail hunters have reason for optimism as the November first season opener approaches.
A new Parks and Wildlife Department survey found encouraging numbers of bobwhite and scaled quail in several parts of the state.
In the Rolling Plains, bobwhite numbers dipped from last year but remained above the recent fifteen-year average.
Biologists credit favorable habitat and timely rainfall in several regions, but caution that hunting conditions can vary widely from one ranch to another.
Hunters should check current regulations before heading afield.
