The UIL has once again delayed implementing a shot clock for Texas high school basketball. At its summer Legislative Council meeting this week, the Athletic Committee opted to keep studying the issue, despite 32 other states planning to use shot clocks by 2026.
For area schools, the delay means another year of traditional play — often marked by slower-paced games and stalling tactics. Smaller schools across the Concho Valley and Agri-Plex may welcome the decision, citing limited budgets and concerns over installing and operating shot clock systems.
Still, some coaches and fans argue the lack of a clock discourages aggressive play and puts defensive efforts at a disadvantage. The UIL also announced girls flag football is under study, and water polo is now a fully sanctioned sport. Baseball playoff formats in Classes 3A and 4A will also change to best-of-three series.
